Ever since GL joked that his snowpile might be bigger than mine (which is highly unlikely), I thought that maybe I should issue a snowpile challenge to all of TalkPA. So Unregistered, would you like to see if you can outsnowpile the snowpile king? Or don't you think you can?
Update pictures are required, at least one per snowpile that is.

land slide or a snow slide.
You have us all at a disadvantage, you have had a head start, you have the experience and knowledge to build best. I read teh blog and know how you block the bottom for a solid foundation.
This challenge should have been made in November before the fist flakes fell.

Normally I would agree with you on this, but this time, I think you and others have a chance. A slim chance, but still a chance. First off, most people's snow melted off during the January thaw including Altoona's snow (except of course, my snowpile which stayed pretty big). Secondly, this snowstorm brought more snow in one punch than all of the previous snows combined (at least for Altoona), and I'd imagine even more substantially for the Philly area. With this snowstorm, and the next one coming, anyone who works at it can catch up and surpass me. In 2004-2005, the second year I beat Bill and my first April snowpile year, I was actually neck and neck with Bill for half of the winter, but then I started doing really wide layers, mixing shovel work with bucket work and most importantly, I added a layer of that slushy snow that fell (it smelled like rotten chinese food, though) and I pulled ahead of him by a mile, and mine lasted about a week longer than his (it was an average winter but a long lasting one). So hey, you still have a chance, especially with that thing you built. Or do you?
Actually, I should have issued it before Columbus Day, because the first snow fall in October. At least for Altoona anyway. And I AM STILL KICKING MYSELF FOR NOT MAKING AN APRIL SNOWPILE......seriously though, this whole thing was made in good fun. Even I really am light years ahead of you, it'll make the whole process more fun. Afterall, now that I got incredibly good at snowpiling, Bill offers hardly any competition, he's the Temple to my Penn State, a traditional rival that I cream every year. My main competitor right now is the school district, but they're not a true competitor because unlike Bill and myself, they aren't competing with me to see with the intent of snowpiling, when I use them as a rival, it's more of a personal measuring stick than anything. It's pretty lonely up here by myself at the top, y'know.

If I had the time for it, I might. But probably next year, and while we are getting lots of snow out here and a blizzard in two days, I don't think with my health nor my brothers' health would it be a good idea. Perhaps next year... gosh, saying that makes me wonder if next year will ever come... hmm...

I understand that you're not up to it, but perhaps even later this year you may feel better. Hopefully you feel better LONG before 2011.
Whoever beats me in this snowpile competition wins $100. New incentive for some?

My entire edge of my driveway is a snowpile.... about and eighth mile long, 4 feet high... Of course, we used a tractor, till it broke, then a snow thrower.

Eighth of a mile long snowpiles remind me of the ones along the sides of the sidewalk that the mini-plows make across the street from me. The best snowpiles have a solid foundation. Usually I build a snowpile with a great foundation and then build up from there.

That one behind my car is hand built...no snowplows involved. Hubby, me and son trying to get the truck and car out of driveway and clearing a spot on the street for the car. Son can't wait to add to it, he and friend want to make tunnels tomorrow..

Nice start, but make the base more solid, it looks like a loose confederation of snow clumps (although we're gonna be competing now, I'll still offer helpful tips so it's not totally one sided), then start adding some height to it. That has the potential to give mine a bit of competition.

Where do you live? If you live in the Carolinas, I'd imagine you got feet of snow from the storms that didn't give us anything. Or maybe you live in south Jersey or somewhere like that. I dunno. Anyways, I'd send you a few truckloads of snow, but I don't have the means to.

My snowpile is 6 foot high but not as long as Altoonas, If its Hight then I won! I need my Digital camera or someone to come here to take a pic to prove it. I will continue to pile it higher after the snowing stops cuz it's still comming down about 1 to 2 inches and hour.

If yours is six feet high then you're a mile from victory, sorry to say. Mine is currently nine feet high and growing. And a nine foot high snowpile is well over twice the size of a six foot snowpile. Keep working on it, I'm going to get mine up to ten feet possibly before I run out of room. But then I'll do auxiliary snowpiles. The key will be how long can you maintain it. A loosely built snowpile won't last very long, so pack it down. And once it's packed down keep adding on top of that. And then pack that down. It's hard work, but well worth it in the end.

I'll do my best to make it higher than yours Altoona But if I can't find my digital camera, how can I take a picture to prove it? Where are you Altoona? By the way, if I do win the money will go to my church missions New Multi Purpose Center where those that are homeless can come there when area shelters discharge them from 7 am until the reopen at 7 pm to 8 pm. I do not want to see anyone get sick and maybe even die from the cold winter. The address of our Mutli-Purpose Center is 801 Upland ave Upland Pa.
