I have to agree with Mr H. I go to NYC often and every time I get off the train and out into the streets I am in awe.

There is no other city like it anywhere. Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, Philly...... nothing at all like NYC.

I love walking across the city or using the subway and mingling in with the regulars. I love going into a little diner in the middle of the block and sitting across from Josh Grobin or walking along and passing Gwenth Paltrow walking along the street.

Tribeca or Soho are wonderful sections to just walk and explore....

You have to do it at least once but I recommend more.

I lived in NY - Mt. Vernon. For a while, I was okay with it, but I am better with the rustling of the trees and the sound of crickets and other wildlife than I am with the trains and the hustle and bustle.... I had enough of NY when I lived there to last me a lifetime...

I did enjoy Times Square at New Years and the Broadway shows... But, now I feel I have done it, what's the point of doing it again.

I traded in the bright lights for starry skies.

Having lived in Hell's Kitchen as a kid I always see the seedy side of New York. Instead of looking up at the skyscrapers in awe, I look down at the chewing gum stuck to all of the sidewalks. I feel like there is a mugger behind me all the time when I am on the streets or the subway. I don't notice the bright lights on Broadway. I notice the junkies and the bums sleeping on cardboard in the hallways.
Is this depression?

By the way there is already a "commuter train" near my house in Milford. It is the MTA train from Port Jervis. It takes 2 and a half hours to get you to Hoboken. I don't consider that a useful commute. You would spend a minimum of 5 hours a day commuting to work.

I was under the impression you were never there from your post.

No I wouldn't want to live there either unless I got to live in that cushy apartment Uncle Bill had in Family Affair.

I don't even want a cushy apartment there... Never wanted to live there - my ex's family lived there and he wanted to be close. I was happy when we lived in Bladenboro, NC in a cabin on 40 acres with no electric or plumbing... I felt very comfortable there.

I'd have to have a rooftop garden as well, with trees and everything.

poconos555 is on a distinguished road
I've been to NYC once around New Years and made a point of riding the subways. I hope a train does come this direction, though.

The oft-delayed Pocono commuter rail project has suffered another setback as federal officials have passed it over for funding from an $8 billion economic stimulus rail program.

The decision to sidetrack the Lackawanna Cutoff — a more than two-decade effort to restore passenger service between the Poconos, central New Jersey and Manhattan — left Pennsylvania's congressional delegation scrambling for alternative funding.

U.S. Sens. Arlen Specter and Bob Casey and Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-11, met last week with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood about the proposal to restore passenger service.

In Monroe County, the stops could include new train stations and parking facilities in Tobyhanna, rural Coolbaugh Township, Analomink, East Stroudsburg and Delaware Water Gap. The rail line would link the Poconos with connections to Manhattan.

The project has been used by local developers for years to promote the area to new residents — long-distance commuters who bought Poconos homes. Some are skeptical the 81-mile project will ever be built, but one national rail expert believes the proposal has merit. read more

this rail line is less of a railroad and more like a roller coster. the ups and downs of this commuter train for the poconos is likely not coming to an end anytime soon.

From the article:
The Pennsylvania Northeast Regional Railroad Authority, which represents Monroe and Lackawanna counties in the passenger effort, owns most track right of way for the Pennsylvania portion.

Its chairman, Bob Hay, believes the congressional delegation's efforts will pay off.

"I have confidence in them that they're doing everything they can to find additional funding because they do support the project so well," Hay said."

Bob Hay is a real estate guy from Stroudsburg who has been saying the "train is coming" for years. Made many sales with the false promise of a train to the Poconos.
