Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.
In 1915, inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields," Moina Michael replied with her own poem:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

She then conceived of an idea to wear red poppies on Memorial day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need. Later a Madam Guerin from France was visiting the United States and learned of this new custom started by Ms.Michael and when she returned to France, made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women. This tradition spread to other countries. In 1921, the Franco-American Children's League sold poppies nationally to benefit war orphans of France and Belgium. The League disbanded a year later and Madam Guerin approached the VFW for help. Shortly before Memorial Day in 1922 the VFW became the first veterans' organization to nationally sell poppies. Two years later their "Buddy" Poppy program was selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it.
Traditional observance of Memorial day has diminished over the years. Many Americans nowadays have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At many cemeteries, the graves of the fallen are increasingly ignored, neglected. Most people no longer remember the proper flag etiquette for the day. While there are towns and cities that still hold Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some people think the day is for honoring any and all dead, and not just those fallen in service to our country. There are a few notable exceptions. Since the late 50's on the Thursday before Memorial Day, the 1,200 soldiers of the 3d U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. They then patrol 24 hours a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag remains standing. In 1951, the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of St. Louis began placing flags on the 150,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery as an annual Good Turn, a practice that continues to this day. More recently, beginning in 1998, on the Saturday before the observed day for Memorial Day, the Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts place a candle at each of approximately 15,300 grave sites of soldiers buried at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park on Marye's Heights (the Luminaria Program). And in 2004, Washington D.C. held its first Memorial Day parade in over 60 years.

Swearing study ranked the most and least courteous states in the country.
Third place? We couldn’t do better than #&@$ing third place?
New Jersey residents were beaten out by Ohio and Maryland in a survey ranking individuals most likely to drop swear words on a complete stranger during a phone conversation.
On the flip side, analysis by the Marchex Institute found that Washington, Massachusetts and Arizona topped the list of state residents least likely to lose their cool.
Marchex examined more than 600,000 calls over a year that were placed by consumers to businesses in 30 different industries.
The mobile advertising company also ranked the most courteous states: South Carolina, North Carolina and Maryland. And the least courteous states: Wisconsin, Massachusetts and Indiana.
Some other findings from the report:

66 percent of curses come from men

The calls that contain the most cursing are more than 10 minutes long. So the longer someone is on the phone, the more likely that call is to devolve.

Calls in the morning are twice as likely to produce cursing as calls in the afternoon or evening.

What do you think about the findings? Are New Jersey residents really more courteous than this survey suggests? Do we need to start saying "thank you" more? Let us know in the comment section, but keep it clean.

MEN with strong upper body strength are more likely to vote conservatively while physically weaker males have a greater tendency towards left-leaning views.

And stronger men are more likely to protect their resources while weaker males favour more socialist views such as wealth distribution, researchers claim.
Psychological scientists Michael Bang Petersen of Denmark’s Aarhus University, and Daniel Sznycer of the University of California, say political motivations may have evolutionary links to physical strength.
The scientists say men's upper body strength predicts and influences their political opinions and this link reflects psychological traits that evolved in response to our early ancestral environments and continue to influence behaviour today.
"While many think of politics as a modern phenomenon, it has - in a sense - always been with our species," they say.

In early days, distribution of resources was achieved through a show of strength as opposed to judicial processes.
With this theory in mind, the scientists set about to prove that upper body strength - seen as a symbol of protecting resources - would predict men's opinions about wealth distribution.
Measuring bicep size and socio-economic status, researchers collected data from hundreds of men from the US, Denmark and Argentina which all have different welfare systems.

There are 2 threads in "Today's Post" with title statements about mistrust. Since; I was going to state "I" but decided to put it another way; it appears many people don't trust the government at all levels do to: mishaps, lies, illegals, taxes, economy, jobs, war, firearms, etc. Oh and let's not forget about the main stream media.

The thought come to mind what do people trust in today?

Do they just watch on the sidelines until the deed affects them personally then they get involved. However by the time they get involved it is in most cases just too late.

So how do the people turn the tide around to put trust back into light.

Just perhaps a silly question and thoughts.

An open letter to pastors {A non-mom speaks about Mother’s Day}

May 10, 2012 by Amy 851 Comments
Dear Pastor,
Tone can be tricky in writing. Picture me popping my head in your office door, smiling and asking if we could talk for five minutes. I’m sipping on my diet coke as I sit down.
You know that I’m not one to shy away from speaking my mind, part of the reason you love me (mostly!), so I’m guessing that internally you brace yourself wondering what might be next.
I set my can down and this is what I’d say.

A few years ago I sat across from a woman who told me she doesn’t go to church on Mother’s Day because it is too hurtful. I’m not a mother, but I had never seen the day as hurtful. She had been married, had numerous miscarriages, divorced and was beyond child bearing years. It was like salt in mostly healed wounds to go to church on that day. This made me sad, but I understood.
Fast forward several years to Mother’s Day. A pastor asked all mothers to stand. On my immediate right, my mother stood and on my immediate left, a dear friend stood. I, a woman in her late 30s, sat. I don’t know how others saw me, but I felt dehumanized, gutted as a woman. Real women stood, empty shells sat. I do not normally feel this way. I do not like feeling this way. I want no woman to ever feel this way in church again.
Last year a friend from the States happened to visit on Mother’s Day and again the pastor (a different one) asked all mothers to stand. As a mother, she stood and I whispered to her, “I can’t take it, I’m standing.” She knows I’m not a mother yet she understood my standing / lie.
Here’s the thing, I believe we can honor mothers without alienating others. I want women to feel welcome, appreciated, seen, and needed here in our little neck of the body of Christ.

Do away with the standing. You mean well, but it’s just awkward. Does the woman who had a miscarriage stand? Does the mom whose children ran away stand? Does the single woman who is pregnant stand? A.w.k.w.a.r.d.

2. Acknowledge the wide continuum of mothering.

To those who gave birth this year to their first child—we celebrate with you
To those who lost a child this year – we mourn with you
To those who are in the trenches with little ones every day and wear the badge of food stains – we appreciate you
To those who experienced loss through miscarriage, failed adoptions, or running away—we mourn with you
To those who walk the hard path of infertility, fraught with pokes, prods, tears, and disappointment – we walk with you. Forgive us when we say foolish things. We don’t mean to make this harder than it is.
To those who are foster moms, mentor moms, and spiritual moms – we need you
To those who have warm and close relationships with your children – we celebrate with you
To those who have disappointment, heart ache, and distance with your children – we sit with you
To those who lost their mothers this year – we grieve with you
To those who experienced abuse at the hands of your own mother – we acknowledge your experience
To those who lived through driving tests, medical tests, and the overall testing of motherhood – we are better for having you in our midst
To those who have aborted children – we remember them and you on this day
To those who are single and long to be married and mothering your own children – we mourn that life has not turned out the way you longed for it to be
To those who step-parent – we walk with you on these complex paths
To those who envisioned lavishing love on grandchildren -yet that dream is not to be, we grieve with you
To those who will have emptier nests in the upcoming year – we grieve and rejoice with you
To those who placed children up for adoption — we commend you for your selflessness and remember how you hold that child in your heart
And to those who are pregnant with new life, both expected and surprising –we anticipate with you
This Mother’s Day, we walk with you. Mothering is not for the faint of heart and we have real warriors in our midst. We remember you.
I’ve created a PDF of The Wide Spectrum of Mothering
3. Commend mothering for the ways it reflects the Imago Dei (Image of God) by bringing forth new life, nurturing those on her path, and living with the tension of providing both freedom and a safety net.
I know I might be an unusual one to be speaking about Mother’s Day; but maybe that’s why so many talk to me about mothering, I’ve got the parts, just not the goods. Thanks for listening and for continuing to mother us in a shepherding way. Even though I’m a bit nervous to come on Sunday, I will be here. But if you make us stand, I might just walk out =).
Warmly and in your corner,
Amy

I could write a book on 2013, but people would believe it to be fiction. I can't make this stuff up. My life has been a wicked roller coaster since the start of 2013, just when you think life couldn't get any crazier, wham bam, it just did.

January: 3 family members lost, 6 family friends lost all within a span of 10 days.
For most of the month I battled pneumonia, which is a life sucker.

February: first part of month was good, then all hell broke loose. Son had a bulging disk in his back, found out on the 27th that it is herniated. goes back in june for another MRI to determine what to do next. Long as he doesn't re-injury it he should be fine they say, this is on top of the bad knee that may require surgery to fix, we will find that out in June also.

March: My daughter has my migraine disorder. March 5th I took her to the doc for meds, she had had a headache for well over 2 weeks and couldn't take it anymore. Doc gave her meds, she started on them the 6th. and had a reaction to them. Or so we thought. Off to the ER, my daughter can't take Benedryl. Found that it was NOT a reaction but something else. Doc in the ER did a CT scan for some reason[rarely ever do they do a CT scan for a suspected allergic reaction]..and my world went crazy. They found an anomaly on the right side of her brain. Transferred to Jefferson by ambu at 11pm that night and 4 days later they released her with strict orders. No driving, working, exercise at all. They ruled out cancer, aneurysm, infectious disease. She has had 2 MRI/MRA's, CT scans, Spinal taps, blood work. Still cannot determine what this thing is. We go next week for another round of tests and appointments.....the day after she came home, hubby came down with what I think was pneumonia, but he wouldn't go to the doc of course. then the week after she came home I fell in a pothole and broke my right ankle and damaged my left knee[which we have since found is very bad arthritis and can't be fixed].

April: for the most part April has been healthy for the most part. With both of us dealing with headaches all the time its no fun at all. Our daughter turned 21 on the 18th. we celebrated as much as possible. she did go back to "normal" activities in early april, but on a limited schedule. Son's back seems to be ok, fingers crossed. my ankle has healed, but with now having 2 recent broken ankles and arthritis in hip, knee and ankles, walking has been a treat for me. At my age this should not be....but it is.

I just keep going, no other choice, its been a whirlwind of crazy. but its my life and I wouldn't give it up for the world. I am not a whiner, I just keep going. So theres my story.

If you’re a man and have ever wanted to dress in women’s lingerie a firm has come up with the perfect product for you.
HommeMystere are hoping their new range of lingerie for males, which includes thongs and padded bras, will change the landscape of men’s underwear.
The Australian firm said their under garments include ‘comfortable men’s panties that really do fit, bra straps that don’t fall off the shoulder, teddies that don’t ride up halfway through the night and quality soft fabrics that feel great for all day wear’.

The label already has a UK seller so men this side of the world can look forward to more ‘enjoyable’ pants.
And the company are keen to stress the garments are not just for gay men.
They added: ‘We provide our lingerie for guys.
‘We are not concerned if you are gay, straight, vegetarian, republican, anglican, martian or any other persuasion.
‘We just design and manufacture attractive luxury underwear for men.’

Cadco 208 Volt Commercial Toaster 6 Slice Toaster by Dualit
At the Government Appliance Store year 2020:
Salesman: Excuse me ma’am, you cannot buy that without a license.
Customer: What? It’s just a toaster…
Salesman: But it is a six slice toaster. It has high-capacity toasting capability. That is a military grade toaster. No one needs a toaster that size. Perhaps I could interest you in an egg timer instead?
Customer: But my family likes toast, just like my forefathers liked toast. I need a six slice toaster. I don’t need an egg timer.
Salesman: (Sigh) Do you know how dangerous toasters are? The crumbs collect in the bottom tray, and can explode in a fireball. People stick forks in them without unplugging first. I would just as soon they be outlawed altogether. No one needs toast. But, it is your right to buy one…we just need to do a background check first, ma’am. The law requires we obtain your record regarding toaster responsibility. Name?
Customer: I have never committed any kind of toasting crime! Are you denying me the right to toast for my family of six without government approval?
Salesman: Hmmm. Family of six? You know, that is at least two more than the Recommended Infant Production (RIP) Rate. Would you like to schedule an Elective Elimination of Kin (EEK) procedure as long as you’re here? It is quickly and easily taken care of to bring you into compliance with RIP.
Customer: What are you talking about? You mean kill two of my kids?
Salesman: Now, now, now, don’t be inflammatory. We don’t like to speak of it in those terms ma’am. We prefer to call this “post-uterine large scale tissue removal.”
Customer: (shudders) No thank you. I guess I’ll just get a toaster oven and be on my way.
Salesman: (chuckling) Ma’am, those have been banned since 2014. They have been implicated in many fatal house-fires. We here at the Government Appliance Store pride ourselves on protecting every family, while of course, protecting the rights of the recreational toaster.
Customer: But I just want to take care of my family. How can I toast my bread?
Salesman: We feel that toasting your bread is a freedom that is just too dangerous nowadays without certain training programs and safeguards in place. Do you know how many children have been senselessly slaughtered by toasters used improperly? For the good of the many, the toast of a few must be sacrificed. And who really needs a 6 slice toaster anyway? The two slice toaster can be reloaded with only minor inconvenience, and is clearly less of a kitchen fire threat, as study after study has demonstrated.

Researchers say Philly's accent changing

Will Philly no longer be a place where residents drink wooder and root for the Iggles?

Gid eowt!

A University of Pennsylvania linguistics professor says the Southern-inflected sound of the Philadelphia dialect is moving toward a more Northern accent. Some of Philly's trademark twangy, elongated vowel sounds are becoming less so, though others are getting stronger.

"Certain changes have continued in the same direction over 100 years and everybody's doing it," said Bill Labov, who has studied the Philadelphia accent since 1971 and recorded hundreds of native speakers born between 1888 and 1992 and living in dozens of neighborhoods. "It doesn't make a difference if you come from Port Richmond or Kensington or South Philadelphia."

With apologies to comedian Jeff Foxworthy, you might be a Philadelphian if: you say beggle (bagel), wooder (water), tal (towel), beyoodeeful (beautiful), dennis (dentist) or Fit Shtreet (Fifth Street). Your pronunciation of your own hometown might come out more like Philuffya, you call your football team the Iggles, you say "ferry" and "furry" the same way, and "radiator" rhymes with "gladiator."

Technological advances have allowed Labov and his colleagues to turn their decades of field recordings into voice spectrographs — computer-generated visualizations of the human voice like an EKG — to track speech variations over time. Regional dialects are cemented by adolescence, so a recording of a 75-year-old Philadelphian made in 1982, for example, should provide a snapshot of what people sounded like around 1925.

The researchers' recent paper in the journal Language, titled "One Hundred Years of Sound Change in Philadelphia," concludes that the city's linguistic character is not disappearing altogether — but it is changing, with the most dramatic shifts occurring in the mid-20th century. The reasons aren't entirely clear but higher education appears to be a factor, as does simply being aware that certain local inflections are disparaged by outsiders.
