Any opinions on Magic Jack?
I just got this mail:
Date: Thursday, September 24, 2009, 3:59 AM
Hi Everyone:
We are now using Magic Jack which only costs $20 annually when making local and long distance phone calls from home. I'm sure most of you have heard of it. Our new home phone is: 623-***-****. Please do not use 623-***-****. It is no longer in service. Our cell phone numbers have not changed.
Thanks,
Linda and Alex

Get Vonage.
Pay one time and get a nice package. And free calls out of country too.

My friend has Vonage... They have echoes, get cut off in the middle of calls and are waiting for their obligation to run out.

I have had mine for over 5 years now. I use Vtech phone and NO problems. Sometime when I do have problems it is the other party with bad phones.

She has a good phone... She is on Comcast. Comcast says it is Vonage, Vonage says it is Comcast. She has been fighting this for a few months, now. Nobody wants to take responsibility and fix the problem.
She will soon be switching from both Comcast and Vonage.
I have considered the Magic Jack.... Just making sure that before I jump in and have to go through all the canceling this and adding that, that it is worth my trouble.

I would advise any one to be careful with vonage. Now I realize any one can have a problem with any company. In 2005 my vonage modem went bad, they replaced it for free, but said that if the old one was not returned, I would be charged for it. I sent it back Fedex, had the signed confirmation and lo and behold 60 days later they billed my debit card the $99. When I called their customer service at first I got the run around until I was put through to a supervisor, I told that person the name of the person who signed for the package and was told it was put on a large pile of returns, and not opened yet. I demanded the charge be credited, which took some time, seems that is how they handle returns.
Then 2 years ago I decided to bundle all services with Comcast, I called Vonage to disconnect was told I would be given 60 days free then it would be disconnected if I did not call them. Well 61 days later they attempted to bill my debit card, when I called to complain again I was given the run around, finally I told them to check the notes on the account, the previous rep did not hold up to his agreement and I was told I would have to pay that bill before I could be disconnected. I spoke to several supervisors all had the same story, finally I told them that if they did not live up to their agreement I was filing a report with the Better Business and the PA State Attorney General's Office, they did not believe me until they got notice from the State Attorney General's office, I was then disconnected as promised. I figured if they did that to me they had also done it to others here in PA. Well that was my dealings with Vonage.

A family member has magic jack and she despises it. More often than not the connection is bad.

Not only that, your computer has to be on 24/7 to get a phone call?

I don't know if I'd want a Magic Jack. My gut tells me to avoid anything that sounds like a possible street name for something else. But then again, Magic Jack does sponsor a college football bowl game, so that lends them some credibility (possibly, anyways, since San Diego Country's credit union sponsors a bowl).
