a very interesting read
here are some excerpts
Quote:
While lots of projects have created jobs, Eyewitness News found millions of dollars in taxpayer money going to projects that created few or no jobs.
Take that study of the so-called "couch potato gene." Researchers at Penn received $467,861 for the study. No one from Penn would go on-camera to talk about it, but a spokesperson told Eyewitness News the gene just happens to have a "quirky" name and could have some life-prolonging benefits. It apparently doesn't have any job creating benefits, though, because no one was hired. Officials say two jobs were retained.
"It's very disturbing," says Congressman Jim Gerlach (R, Pennsylvania). Congressman Gerlach says he voted against the stimulus package last year in part because he was worried not enough money was going directly to job creation.

How about $155,521 to study the song of zebra finches, a common household pet? In their proposal, researchers at Rutgers say the study can help better understand "vocal learning." But that doesn't do much to put people back to work. No full-time jobs were created here. The best the project could do is retain one research associate.

Then there's the money for the Spirit of Philadelphia, a private wining and dining cruise ship on the Delaware. A spokesperson for parent company Entertainment Cruises says the money will help the company "meet new maritime security regulations for passenger vessels."
But the grant is not creating any jobs. And the furthest the Spirit of Philadelphia sails is the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
